I am finally getting around to sharing these easy DIY Valentine heart shaped marshmallows. Ever since I made marshmallows for the rice Krispy treats I made for my moms surprise birthday party, I’ve been hooked. My plan for these babies is to put them on a Valentine charcuterie board, but we have also enjoyed eating them plain. They also taste great in hot chocolate. I use the same recipe as I do with my plain marshmallows, but figured I would share the recipe here too.
Homemade Marshmallows
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons gelatin I use Knox
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 cups sugar
- 1/4 cup agave syrup
- 1/2 cup water
Cornstarch dusting
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup powder sugar
Instructions
- Pour the 1/2 cup of water into a mixing bowl and sprinkle the gelatin over it. Allow to sit for 10 minutes.
- Mix the water, sugar and agave syrup in a pot. Bring to a boil and allow to reach 240° on a candy thermometer.
- Pour syrup over gelatin and mix on medium high for 5 minutes.
- Add vanilla (and gel food coloring if you want to dye them a color) and continue to mix on high for an additional 5 minutes.
- After grease a spatula and dump marshmallow into a 9X13 pan that has been lined with parchment paper and sprayed with cooking spray. Dust the top with a few tablespoons of the cornstarch mixture and allow to sit overnight
- The next day dust all utensils with the cornstarch mixture and cut marshmallows. Then place marshmallows in a bag with a few tablespoons of the cornstarch mixture and shake to coat the marshmallows.
Making the marshmallows is super simple! You really do need a candy thermometer, unless you are good at telling what stage boiling sugar is in (which I am not. I tried making marshmallows without a candy thermometer and they failed). After you have spread the fluff into the pan you do have to let it sit overnight so be ready for that. While I didn’t take any step by step directions for these, I did for my original marshmallows, once again, you can check those out here. After they have sat overnight, instead of cutting them with a knife, use a cookie cutter to do it.
I did take a video when I made these, which I am finally starting to edit. After Matt had to reformat my computer I needed to find some new open source editing software. Unfortunately the one I started using ended up crashing every time I tried to add a photo (you know after I had already spend about an hour editing the other part of the video), so it’s time to to try a new one.
At any rate, I really love how fluffy and tasty homemade marshmallows turn out. I think they taste so much better than the ones you use in the store. Plus it’s so much fun to be able to cut out shapes and dye them whatever color you want. I am planning on including them on a Valentine charcuterie tray, just like I did last year. I’m trying to include some different items on this year’s tray, so be on the look out for that post!
