I hope that everyone had a fantastic Valentine’s Day. With two young kids (one of whom won’t take a bottle) going out wasn’t really an option. I had found some lobster tail at Kroger on sale for $5 a piece, so decided to get some filet mignon and make a nice surf and turf for dinner.
I was a bit intimidated at first, since I’ve never cooked filet mignon before, and well, you don’t want to mess up $20 worth of meat. Surprisingly it wasn’t too difficult to do.
The Surf:
There are tons of ways to cook a lobster. I went with the boiling method.
Here is what they look like raw
I brought a pot of water to a boil on the stove.
Before putting the lobsters in I stuck a bamboo skewer through them to keep the tail from curling.
I then boiled the tails for about 9 minutes (I read that you should do 1 minute per ounce).
Look how yummy they look!
Serve with melted butter for dipping.
The Turf:
Find some nice filets. Let them come to room temperature for about 20-30 minutes before cooking.
Season them with a dash of salt and pepper.
Sear each side 3-4 minutes (in a pan that can go into the oven) in olive oil that has been heated. Do not move the steaks around while searing (this was really hard for me to do).
After you have flipped the steaks and seared the second side, put pan in an oven that has been preheated to 425 degrees. Cook steaks for 7-10 minutes depending on the thickness of the steaks. Use a meat thermometer to check temperature, cook more if needed.
Transfer meat to a dish, tent with tin foil and let rest for about 5 minutes.
Now, many people say you don’t need to serve filet mignon with anything. The hubby and I like a little something, so I served it with some zip sauce. I melted a few tablespoons of butter then added a little kitchen bouquet to it (about 1/2 teaspoon).
Pair with a red wine…yummy!
I even splurged on an actually bottle of wine (we normally just buy a jug of Carlo Rossi).
Then for dessert we had some Toll-house Pie, and some Late Harvest Riesling from a Michigan Winery.
