I’m excited to finally share my Valentine’s Day dessert board. Also, is it just me or do you constantly have to look up how to spell dessert. Whenever I write it, it just never looks right. I mean spelling has never been my strong suit to begin with, but still. I know I can’t be alone right?
Also, I’m make sure to call this a dessert board. Last year I called it a “dessert charcuterie board” and it annoyed people enough to comment on my Pinterest pins that “this isn’t a real charcuterie board.” “Ugh I’m so annoyed when people call something like this charcuterie.” I just sort of rolled my eyes. I mean I get it. I know that charcuterie is a French term that has to do with prepared meats. A main reason for my blog title was for SEO purposes. And it seems to be working since that post is getting lots of traffic right now. At any rate, onto my board!
What’s on my Valentine’s Day Dessert Board
I did include some of the same items as I did last year, but there are also some new ones. Looking at these pictures I realized I forgot to included the Dove chocolates that I bought. Oops.
- Homemade Marshmallows
- Decorated sugar cookies
- Chocolate covered strawberries
- Dipped oreos
- Macaroons
- Chocolate covered pretzels
- Circus Animal Snack Mix
- M&Ms
- Conversation heats
With the exception of the M&Ms and conversation hearts the items on the board are homemade (well I didn’t make the Oreos, but I did dip them).
I know the writing on the cookies isn’t the best, but one of my goals for the year is to improve my cookie game, so it was an excuse to practice, even if they did come out a bit “ransom note” looking.
I was also happy with how the strawberries turned out since, one, they were done with Autumn’s help. And two, I tempered chocolate to use. Normally I just use the chocolate candy bark, but the store was all out , so I had to do something else. I used the same tempered chocolate for the pretzels as well.
For the circus animal mix I changed it a bit from the recipe I first came up with. Instead of peanuts I used Chex , and also included dried cherries which were soooooo good! Really there are so many ingredients you could use to make your own mix, and I’m sure it would still be so tasty.
My favorite part though…. the macaroons. I’ve made three batches, and these (my second batch) have been the best so far. Macaroons are so finicky and one little change can cause the whole thing to be ruined. These one, though smaller than a normal macaroon, had great feet, and weren’t too hollow. Plus they tasted fabulous.
My girls were so excited that I finally took pictures of the board. I had made the items and just had to find the time to snap the photos. They very much enjoyed all the items (over the course of a week or so).
Have you ever made a dessert board? What items would you put on it?
