A few weeks later and I am finally getting the directions up for the Little Mermaid Cookies I made for Annabelle’s Birthday party.  I tried to take pictures for each step, so that it gives you a good idea of how to do them. These cookies aren’t exactly hard, but they do take time, since you have to let them dry between steps.
You’ll need to use your favorite sugar cookie recipe, as well as a royal icing recipe you like. When I make cookies I am decorating with royal icing I like to roll dough thick, like 1/4 of inch. If you have problems with keeping the dough a uniform thickness, then you need to get yourself some of these. They slip right onto your rolling pin, and your dough will always be the right thickness. You will also need a large egg cookie cutter. I used this one from Wilton, but anyone would do (as long as it’s big enough).
I’m not really going into detail on this post about royal icing, mainly because I am no where near an expert on it. When I use royal icing I usual outline the area using a thicker icing in a piping bag (or a zip lock bag with the corner cut off), with a 1 or 2 tip. Then when I flood the cookies with a thinner icing (maybe like a 15/20 second icing) I use a squeeze bottle.
Onto the directions!
So to start, roll, bake, and cut your cookies. Then trace and flood the cookie with a light blue royal icing.  You want to make sure this is as smooth as you can make it, since you will be putting the Little Mermaid on top of this. Let it dry overnight.
Next up take your template (which will be available later today. I just realized I forgot to upload it) and lay it on your cookie. Before you trace anything you want to make sure that everything fits.
Next up is to trace the hair using an edible marker.
Using red tinted royal icing, trace around the hair, then flood the area. I don’t think I quite had the consistency right for the hair, so it didn’t turn out as puffy has I had hoped it would.
Let this dry for at least a few hours, preferably overnight. Once dried, trace the rest of the body.
Ok, here’s the part I missed a few steps. Sorry about that!
So first of trace and flood the body of the Little Mermaid. Also, trace and flood the main part of the tail.
Let that dry a few hours or overnight. Once dry, you can add the eyes and mouth using an edible food marker, add the bra, and the belly button. I also add peach colored lines to help show were her arms should be (b/c with out that it kinda looked like a blob).
Once that has dried for a few hours, you can add the rest of tail.
And there you have it! I wrapped each cookie in saran wrap, and put them in the goodie bags.
