Eeeek! I can’t believe it is already August! September is just around the corner. That means many kids will be going back to school, and schedules get busy.

I am a bit old school (perhaps due to the fact I don’t have a smartphone, or maybe it’s the teacher in me) and love having an actual paper planner. I use different color pens for different events (doctors, mom’s club stuff and so on). This means I need to keep those pens close to my planner. I started by using a zip lock bag, but I was always searching around for it. So I decided to make a pen holder that would attach to my planner so everything was all together in one place.
1. So to make this pen holder you need to start with a piece of fabric. You will want to make it about a 1/2 inch longer than you want, and two times as wide.
You also need a piece of elastic that is just a little longer than your planner.
2. After cutting your fabric, you will need to create a hem on the long sides. To create the hem you want to fold the edge once, then fold it again so that you can’t see the raw edge.
Here is how it should look hemmed.
3. After hemming both sides, you need to fold the fabric in half, right sides together. Open the fabric up, and place the elastic on one side.
Fold the fabric in half again. You want to sandwich the elastic in between both sides.
4. Sew one side of the closed, so that you sew the fabric and elastic.
5. Turn the case so that it is right side out. You should have your elastic sewn on one end with the other end open.
6. Next up it to draw your lines to sew the pockets where you will put the pens. I like to use chalk, but sometimes it’s hard to draw thin lines with it. Here is what I do:
This also comes in handy when I do lettering for my chalk board.
So, I put my lines on my bag about one inch apart.
7. After drawing your lines, go ahead and sew straight up them. I have highlighted the lines on my pouch. I left one pocket slightly larger.
8. Next up you need to fold the edges over on the open side of the pen holder. You want to make sure the raw edges are in the case.
9. Sandwich the elastic in between the fabric.
10. Sew the side closed.
10. Put your case on your planner and enjoy how easily accessible your pens are!
