Would you believe that I’ve been meaning to do this post for a whole year?? I made the girls each a DIY trick or treat bag last year and just never got around to sharing it on the blog. I know that Halloween is in a few days, but better late than never right?
Materials needed for DIY Trick or Treat Bag
- Fabric of your choice for outside of bag
- Fabric for lining
- Fusible fleece
- Thread
Cut your fabric
Main Fabric
I decided to use three fabrics, the sizes, and how many you need to cut are as follows
(1) Bottom – 3.5″ x 12.75″ {this is the piece on the far left in the picture}
(6) Front/Back – 6″ X 13″ { these are the pieces in the middle}
(6) Sides – 6″ X 4″ {these are on the left of the picture.
Lining Fabric
You will cut:
(1) bottom- 3.5″ X 12.75″
(2) front/back 16.25″ X 13″
(2) sides 16.25″ X 4″
Fusible Fleece
You will cut the same as you did for the lining
(1) bottom- 3.5″ X 12.75″
(2) front/back 16.25″ X 13″
(2) sides 16.25″ X 4″
Strap pieces
For the strap pieces you will need:
(2) main fabric 18″ X 4″
(2) fusible fleece 18″ X 4″
Putting the DIY trick or treat bag together
The outside layer
In the directions I put the photo first, followed by written instructions.
To start you will sew both sides on one of the front back pieces.
Then, take the other front/back piece and sew it onto the other side of the side pieces.
Now it’s time to put all the pieces together. You basically have three loops right now. With right sides together, put the top and middle pieces together and sew across one edge. Basically I slipped one loop around the other one.
Next slip the other loop over the center with right side together, and sew the edge.
Now you need to sew the bottom on. Pin right sides together, and sew edges.
Yay! You are done with the outer part of the bag!!
The Lining
To start iron the fusible fleece to the wrong side of the lining. I then like to baste it on to make sure it doesn’t move around.
Just like before you are going to sew the sides on to a front/back piece.
Next you are going to take the other front/back piece and sew that onto the sides.
Last up is sewing the bottom onto the lining bag.
The Straps
So I didn’t take a ton of pictures of the straps. But you will iron the fusible fleece onto the wrong side of the strap. Then fold the strap in half (with right sides together) and sew the long side, leaving an opening to turn it out. I sewed the short sides which, I realized is not necessary.
Putting the DIY trick or treat bag all together
Now it’s time to put it all together. Turn the main fabric inside out. Tuck the lining into the main fabric so right sides are together. Sandwich the straps between the two fabrics, so that the loop is between the fabrics, and the raw edges are at the top of the bag. Be sure to leave a hole for turning it out. You want the hole to be kind of big since the fleece makes the lining bulky. If you look in the pictures, you can kind of see the straps peaking out.
Turn the bag out and pull the lining out like above. Then you can push the lining in, and run an edge stitch around the top to close the hole.
I didn’t take pictures of the last step, but if you want to give it a quilted feel (and to help keep the lining from moving) run a stitch all around the bag where the different fabrics meet.
And there you have it! A super cute, homemade treat bag that should last years.
