Would you believe that I started this cable knit mug cozy post back in August?? I wanted to re-do some pictures, then other posts came up, and this just kept getting pushed back. I finally scheduled it in again, since it’s the end of September, and I think it would be great to use in the fall.
I originally made these cozies for a fundraiser. A foundation was having an NF Walk as a fundraiser for Neurofibromatosis (you can read more about NF here or here. One of the people involved in the event posted on Facebook that they were look for raffle/auction items. I responded that I could whip up some mug cozies, nothing too fancy, but it would be something. She said yes, so I started knitting.
Seriously, these are so very east to do. Since I used chunky yarn it only took me two hours tops to complete one (most of which was done while playing with the girls or watching TV). And I am not an advanced knitter in the least. I only recently started learning how to knit, so if I can do it, I think anyone can.
This is my first attempt at writing a knitting pattern, so apologizes if it is hard to understand. If crochet is more your speed, check out this crochet mug cozy I made.
I decided to give you the “pattern” first. I tried to take step by step pictures, and those are after the pattern.
This cable knit mug cozy whips up quickly, and turns out so cute. Be sure to click to get the pattern! Click To TweetMaterials Needed:
Chunky Yarn (size 6)
8mm knitting needles (US size 11)
Cable needle, or double point needle
Abbreviations:
K= knit
P= Purl
Row 1: Start by casting on 10 using the long tail method (don’t know what I am talking about? Check out Wool and the Gang).
Row 2: K1 P1 K6 P1 K1
Row 3: P1 K1 P6 K1 P1
Row 4: K1 P1 K6 P1 K1
Row 5: P1 K1 P6 K1 P1
Row 6: K1 P1 K6 P1 K1
Row 7: P1 K1 P6 K1 P1
Row 8: This is your cable row
K1 P1 slip the next three stitches onto your cable or double point needles, knit the next three stitched on your needle (let the able needle hang in front), the knit the three stitches from your cable needle. then P1 K1
Repeat the rows until you get to 32 rows. The 32nd row will be a cable stitch.
Cast off leaving a long tail.
Use that tail to create two loops on one of the short sides. These will be “button holes” Sew buttons onto the opposite end of the loops. Now you can button the buttons through the loops, so that it stays on your travel mug.
So, here goes the picture tutorial:
Row 1
First cast on 10, using the long tail method. You will end up with this.
Now you are going to flip your needle over so you can continue on to the next row. This is what the back of your first row looks like. Row two is on the needle ready to be knit.
Row 2:
Now it’s time to start row two. The even rows will be the front of the work, and you will always use the same stitches K1 P1 K6 P1 K1
After doing those stitches your knitting will look like this:
Once again, just like before you will be flipping the needle over. Here is what the back of your knitting will look like now.
Row three:
The odd rows are considered the back of your work. You will do the same stitches on all the odd rows. P1 K1 P6 K1 P1.
Now you have this.
Notice you have three rows complete, with the fourth row on the hook, ready to be knit.
Row 4
Now we are working on the front of your knitting so, K1 P1 K6 P1 K1
Row 5
Now it’s time to P1 K1 P6 K1 P1
Row 6
K1 P1 K5 P1 K1
Row 7
P1 K1 P6 K1 P1
Row 8
THIS IS WHERE THINGS CHANGE!
This is your cable row. You will need to get you cable needle, or your double pointed needle for this.
Start by doing a K1 P1 (don’t mind the needle switch up. These are from the first round of pictures I took when doing the cozy).
Then slip the next 3 knit stitches onto the cable needle (or double pointed needle like I am using)
Now you are going to K3 on the stitches that are on you knitting needle (not cable/double pointed needle). Notice the double pointed needle is in front of my knitting needles.
Next knit the three stitches (using the knit stitch) on the cable needle
Finally P1 the K1
You are going to repeat these 8 rows three more times, so you will end up with 32 rows. The 32 row being a cable stitch row.
After getting all of your rows done, you will end up with this.
Now bind of your work leaving a long-ish tail.
Use that tail to make two “button loops”. Sorry I didn’t take pictures, but I used a tapestry needle, and made a few stitches in the middle, then in the end.
Weave the tail in the back of the work, and add some buttons.
And there you have it! I made three of them, because they really were easy to whip up.
So now, if you are looking for a little gift, make one of these, add a gift card to Starbucks, and you’ll have a happy recipient.
