One of my goals this summer is to have a “90s style” summer. Like the summers of my youth. I am going to try hard to limit the girls (as well as my own) screen time. I want to spend as much time outside as possible, and do lots of fun activity. Something else I remember fondly? Participating in the summer reading program at my local library. Unfortunately, due to COVID, the program at our local library isn’t quite as exciting. So I decided to come up with my own. Today I wanted to share my free DIY summer reading program.
So the reason I like this is because you can totally customize it. You get two sheets of paper, own with a path, and the second with squares of ideas for “prizes” .
Some of the incentives include:
- breakfast for dinner
- family movie night
- ice cream party
- make a fort
- stay up late
- paint a canvas
Most of these ideas are relatively easy. They don’t require a ton of set up, and can hopefully be done with items you have around the house (except for a few).
First up, you need to print up the path and choices.
Then you can decide what each box on the path stands for. In our case, each square counts for 30 minutes of reading. When ever we complete 30 minutes of reading, we color in a square. For every two hours read, the girls get a prize. They each got to pick two prizes to put on the path, then decided together on the last one.
If they happen to finish this path, we will simply print up a new one, and start again.
I hope that you can use this free DIY summer reading challenge to help keep your kids engaged in reading.
