Thankfully our insurance didn’t require much to get approved for the helmet. All we needed was a letter from the pediatrician and then some measurements and pictures from the orthotist. We were able to go in today to get Annabelle’s head scanned so they can make the helmet for her. Before scanning was around they would have had to get a plaster mold of her head. That seems like it would be quite dramatic and I am thankful things have changed! In order to get scanned Annabelle had to wear a white cap with reflectors all over it (I used my non-smart phone to take a picture. Hopefully I can get it on my computer soon, it’s being difficult today. I will post it when I can. I think she looks kinda cute).
They then waved a wand around her head (similar to a bar scanner at a store), which picked up the reflectors and created a 3-D image on a computer. They use this image to create the helmet. We will go in two weeks to get the helmet and make sure it is adjusted properly. Then we get start rounding out her head.
Here are some of the before pictures:
Her CI is 101 (ratio of head length to head width), average is 78, so we have a little way to g0.
Also, I had mentioned before how she sleeps in “touchdown” position. This is what I mean:
