** Decorating for Christmas doesn’t have to break the bank. This simple dollar store DIY Christmas wreath is sure to add some joy to your decorating.**
Now that Thanksgiving is almost here, I can really start thinking about decorating for Christmas! I know many people already have up their Christmas decorations, but we always wait until after Thanksgiving to put them up. And you better believe the morning after Thanksgiving I am hauling up all the bins to get started.
The past few years I had been seeing the trend of hanging wreaths on kitchen cabinet doors, and I am here for it. My issue was that we have quite a few cabinet doors, and that I didn’t want huge wreaths. Then one day I was at the dollar store and saw the perfect plain wreath! It wasn’t too big, and I knew I could make it work for what I wanted, and this this simple dollar store DIY wreath was born!
Materials Needed
- wreath
- garland ties
- assorted bulb ornaments of different size and color
- fake holly berries
- ribbon
- hot glue… so much hot glue….
I got all of these materials from the dollar store. I did spray paint the wreath white. It was a light wood color before, and becuase of the nature of the wreath parts of it got hit with more white than other. But I figured it gives it a bit of a “rustic” look, so I decided not to worry about it.
Putting the simple dollar store DIY Christmas wreath together
STEP ONE: Cut the garland ties
This is what the garland ties look like. They come in packages of 12. The amount you need all depends on how many wreaths you want to make. I bought a bunch of them since any extra I will use to tie our garland onto our banister.
I took each piece of garland and cut it into about three pieces. No need for them to be even.
STEP TWO: Glue them onto your wreath
Now you are going to take the garland pieces and glue them onto your wreath. I tried to put them on randomly.
STEP THREE: Add the ornaments
Next up is to glue on the ornament bulbs. Use a variety of colors and sizes to give the wreath some character.
STEP FOUR: Add the extra embellishments
Now you can add the holly berries, bows, or other things you may want to use to decorate your wreath. I used the ribbon I bought to make my own bows, but you can buy them as well.
STEP FIVE: add counter weight
Now, this step is totally optional, but I glued a few washers on the back of the wreath, opposite of where I put the ornaments. When I went to hang my wreath the first time it wouldn’t stay straight because the weight of the ornaments. So I wanted to attempt to counterbalance it.
STEP SIX: hang it up
Now, your wreath is done! Hang up your dollar store DIY Christmas Wreath and enjoy your handiwork. And hope your husband doesn’t come down and see all the wreaths and shake his head….
