Crochet Mug Cozy {Free Pattern}

Now that the cool weather is finally here I enjoy my cup of coffee in the morning even more.  As a mom there are times I pour myself a cup of coffee, but don’t get to finish the whole thing.  Mug cozies are a fun way to help keep your drink warm while adding a little bit of style to your mug.  Today I wanted to share with you a quick and easy mug cozy you can whip up in all sorts of colors.  I used the star stitch with this cozy, which is one of my favorite stitches!  Why not make a different one for each day of the week?

Like I said, this whips up super fast, and looks so cute!  I always like pictures in my tutorials so I did that.  But, if you would rather just look at the pattern scroll down.

hdc= half double crochet
bphdc= back post half double crochet
sc=single crochet
dc

STEP ONE

Start by chaining four.

In the the second chain from hook work a hdc. Work a hdc in each stitch. You will end up with 3 hdc.

STEP TWO

Chain two. Bphdc in each stitch. At the end of each row chain two and turn. Continue doing bphdc until you have 31 rows.

STEP FOUR

Now it’s time to add on the gray.
Chain 3

Insert hook into loop left from the turquoise color.

Yarn over and pull through to attach.

Then continue adding single crochets across until you have 34 then chain three. Turn.

STEP FIVE

Now it’s time for the star stitch
First, insert hook into second chain from hook. Yarn over and pull through.

Then, insert into the third chain from the hook, yarn over, and pull through

Continue inserting hook into stiches, yarning over and pulling through until you have 6 loops on your hook.

Yarn over, and pull through all six stitches.

STEP SIX

Now its time to do the rest of the stars.
Ch one, then insert hook into the eye you just made, yarn over and pull through.

Insert hook between the last two spikes, yarn over and pull through

Insert the hook into the same space as the first stars last spike, yarn over and pull through

Finally insert your hook into the next two stitches, yarning over each time. Now you will have six loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through all six loops. Chain one. Now continue making star until you reach the end. Place a hdc in the last stitch.

STEP SEVEN

Chain two. Work on hdc into the eye of the first star. From there work two hdc into each star.

When you get to the end work on hdc into the last stitch

STEP EIGHT

Ch 3, and then work a second row of star stitches in. Like you did in the first rows. Insert your hook and pull through six stitches before yarning over and pulling through all 6 stiches. Once you do a second row of the stitches ch 2, turn and work a hdc into the center of each star. In the end your cozy should look somethiing like this.

STEP NINE

Add a scalloped edge by working three hdc into the first stitch, then clip stitching into the next two pastiches.

Continue this across

STEP TEN

Now you need to add a band with a loop so you can actually attach it to a mug. Work four single croches along the edge of the gray.

Ch one. Work on sc and dc into the first stitch. Skip the next stitch and work 1 sc and one double.

Ch one. Work a SC and a DC into the blank stitches.  do one more row.

STEP ELEVEN

Wok one more row of sc/dc, then Chain 4.

Attach to the rest of the cozy. Then work four dc into that loop.

Tie off, weave ends and add a button, and bow if you would like!

Seriously. I know it looks complected, but it is really easy! I hope you give it a try!
