So remember how back in September I made a unicorn cake for Autumn’s birthday? Well I am finally getting around to getting it up on the blog! Since I’m a bit of a crazy person I actually re-made the cake because I knew I could do a better job. I also wanted to get more detailed step by step instructions.
To start off you need to bake your cake. This needs to be a tall cake, so you’ll need three round sections. You could use any type of cake mix you’d like. I go with chocolate, because, in my opinion, if it’s not chocolate, can you even call it a dessert? Since I was making a small cake I used Corringware ramekins. If you are making a larger cake, you may need to double your cake recipe.
After letting the cakes cool, cut off the top dome part to make them as flat as possible.
Using buttercream frosting and begin to assemble your cake.  Yes it’s going to be tall.
Once the cake is put together, you’ll want to put a light layer of frosting on the edges, known as a crumb coat. After putting the crumb coat on, you will put the cake in the fridge for about an hour or so to harden up. This helps keep the crumbs from showing up on your top layer. You can see it’s just a light layer, and not very smooth.
Let the cake harden up in the fridge for a few hours, then take it out and frost it again. To help get the buttercream extra smooth, I glob the frosting on the cake and spread it out with a knife. Then I run the knife under hot water, dry it off a bit, and smooth it out more.
Now take a toothpick and make an outline of how you want the main to look.
After that color your frosting what you would like and pipe onto your cake using a star tip. I did one color at a time, and just randomly placed the stars.
Then when you are all done make ears using fondant, and make a horn by wrapping fondant around an ice cream cone. If I were to do this cake again, I would have made the spiral much thicker.
I actually don’t have many pictures since we didn’t throw a big party. Between moving, being pregnant, and Annabelle starting kindergarten, a small family party was all that was happening. I do feel a bit guilty, but then remind myself that Annabelle only had one friend over to celebrate when she turned three, so I don’t think it’s too big of a deal. However if you are looking for birthday party ideas you can check out this purple and turquoise party I threw for Autumn when she turned one, or Annabelle’s Little Mermaid party.
