Today I wanted to share that sign I mentioned in Monday’s post. It’s a DIY reversible holiday sign that shouldn’t be too hard to make.  On one side you have a fall sign, and on the other a Christmas one. You guys I’ve really been getting into using my Silhouette. It is such a great machine! While you can purchase fonts for it, so far, I’ve either designed stuff with what is available in the silhouette studio, or used Canva (a slightly more complicated process). If you missed it, here is a Hocus Pocus shirt I made.
For this sign, I first made one for myself, then decided it would make an awesome wedding present for an upcoming wedding I am going to. A wedding of a little girl I used to babysit. I’m still in denial that I’m old enough to have someone I used to babysit for get married.
So to start of you will need a wood board cut to the dimensions of 20″ x 5.5″. Sand the corners to round them out a bit.
Next up pick out a stain, and stain your board. I went with a walnut gel stain by General Finishes, and applied two coats.
After that has dried, it’s time to give it a “weathered” look by dry brushing paint on top if it. I simply used a white acrylic paint, but I think you could use an interior paint as well. Whatever paint you use, just barely get your brush wet. I later sanded mine a little since I didn’t like how much white was showing.
Let this dry, and cut your stencil.  Whenever I make a stencil with my Silhouette I use Oracal Oramask 813. It’s not pricey, works great, and is available on amazon! Some of the places that do board painting also use it, so I feel pretty legit when I do too. 😉 I am giving you two studio files, the Fall Sign, and the Christmas sign.  I am trying hard to figure out how to convert it to an SVG file so it’s more accessible to others, but haven’t quite got it figured out. Also, on each of these files I have left the family name, and the date blank, so you can fill it in yourself. You will have to curve that text yourself, as there was no easy way to leave it curved.

I know this picture is super hard to see, but on the top you have the Christmas stencil (it is upside down), and on the bottom you have the fall one.
So now that you have your stencils cut, it’s time to weed! You want to take away all the material where you want to paint.
Then, grab some painters tape and use it to tape all of the free pieces (like the middle of the O). These are the pieces that you need on your stencil, but won’t transfer when you lift the stencil off.
Remove the stencil and place it on your board.
Carefully remove the painters tape, and start painting. I used stencil brushes to do this, but you can also use foam brushes. The technique is the same for both. Get a small amount of paint on the brush, and gently dab it on your stencil. In the end you will have something like this.
Be sure to remove the stencil when the paint is still wet. After it has dried a little you can take off the pieces that are on the inside of the letters. And admire your handiwork!
And there you have it! Something super cute to decorate your house in, or to give as a gift! 🙂
