Babies and diapers go hand in hand. As a mom I know how many diapers a child can go through in a day, let alone a year. In case you didn’t know, it’s a pretty large quantity. But do you know something? In the almost 5 years I’ve been diapering my girls, never once did I have to worry where that next diaper would come from. If I was running low, I just went to the store to pick up more. Not everyone is that lucky.
Did you know that one-in-three families in the U.S. struggle to provide enough diapers needed to keep their baby or toddler clean, dry, and healthy? Or, that of families in diaper need 57% miss work or school due to a lack of sufficient diapers required by programs to care for a baby or toddler? Read that again. 57% of parents who need diapers, have to miss work because they don’t have enough diapers. This fact makes me grateful that I’ve never had to worry about affording diapers, but incredibly sad that so many families do.
This year for Christmas I’ve been talking more about donations with the girls. I had them pick out a few gently used toys that they no longer play with to donate to kids in need. I decided to take a page out of my own book, and create a fun gift basket you can donate to a local family in need or a shelter.
I knew I wanted to get a variety of diapers in this basket so I headed to my local Meijer to pick up some Huggies.
As the founding sponsor of the National Diaper Bank Network since 2011, Huggies, through its No Baby Unhugged program, has provided ongoing support for the organization and has donated more than 200 million diapers and baby wipes, including critical donations during times of crisis, to those in diaper need. You can easily help this program simply by buying diapers at Meijer. For every pack of Huggies purchased at Meijer through December 23rd Huggies will donate a day’s worth of diapers and Meijer will donate $1 to the National Diaper Bank Network. Â Plus, right now Meijer has a sweepstakes to win a year of free diapers! Read to the end of the post to find out the details!
Our go-to Huggies are the Snug & Dry, or Little Movers, so those are the ones we purchased to include in our basket. Â Besides diapers I also included wipes, bibs, and some homemade burp cloths. I’ve included a little “tutorial” as they are not hard to make at all, and will hopefully help brighten someone’s day.
-  Cut two pieces of fabric out sized 17.5 by 10.25. I rounded the edges, but you don’t have to. I used fleece for on side, and minky for the other.
- Place them right sides together.
- Â Sew together, leaving an opening to turn.
- Â Turn right side out and edge stitch, closing the opening.
With our basket in hand, Autumn and I headed to a local organization while Annabelle was in school to drop everything off.
