On my Friday post I shared with you some “tactile turkeys” I made for Annabelle. I tried to let her color the turkeys, but she had no interest in it, so I did most of it myself. At the end of the post I will share other ways you can use turkeys as a fun, but educational project.
Cut out a circle for the body of the turkey and a ovalish shape for the head. I used manilla folders since I didn’t have any brown card stock. Also, if older kids are doing this let them cut out their own body and head.
Step Two:
Attach the head to the body. I am sorry the picture is sideways. I can’t get it to rotate!
Step Three:
Cut out your feathers. I used scrapbook paper, but you can use construction paper if you want.
Step Four-Six:
Sorry… I forgot to take pictures of the other steps. After you have your feathers cut out attach them to the body of the bird. Make some beaks, waddles, and feet and attach those too. If you are making tactile turkeys now is the time to write the tactile word (i.e. soft in this picture).
After that, feel free to use contact paper to make the birds a bit more sturdy. My contact paper stinks, and doesn’t really stick that well, but I tried.
Finally, glue what ever tactile item onto the bird that matches the word you wrote.
Here are all the turkeys I made. The sparkly one may have been a bit of a mistake, since the first thing Annabelle did was try to tear off the contact paper. Luckily the sparkles were glued down (prior to the contact paper) and didn’t get all over.
So how can you use this idea in other ways?
1. Rhyming turkeys. Write the the word family in the center (i.e. -at family), and then have your child write (or tell you) words that are part of the family. The rhyming words co on the feathers.
2. Math facts turkeys. In the center of the turkey write (or have your child write) a number. Come up with different number sentences that will give you that number and write them on the feathers.
3. Thesaurus turkeys. Write a common word on the turkey and see how many synonyms you can come up with.
4. Turkey facts. Doing a little research about turkeys? Write some facts on the feathers.
Hope this inspires you to work on your own turkey projects. 🙂
And of course, don’t forget about the Countdown to Christmas link up going live on Wednesday! Can’t wait to see all the holiday-ness to come!
