Today I am going to share with you how I made the ruffle dress for our little girl who will be joining us soon.
STEP ONE
Cut a piece of fabric in a rectangle. Using measurements I based on average sized I cut it 17″ by 10″ (and I’m a bit worried it is to small). If you are making it for an older child measure their chest and add at least 6″ (if you want to to be more gathered at the top, then add more inches) For the length measure from where you want the dress to start (right above the arm pit) down. Add an inch.
STEP TWO
Fold and press a hem on the bottom and a casing on the top. Sew the hem, but do not sew the casing. The size of the casing depends on what size elastic you will be using. Mine was about a 1/4″.
STEP THREE
STEP FOUR
Continue sewing the lace on, being sure to overlap the lace a little. Stop before you get to the top.
STEP FIVE
Now you want to push up the casing you made, so that the top of the piece of lace will match up with the edge of the casing. I hope the pictures help what I said make sense.
STEP SIX
Fold the dress in half with right sides together and sew up the side. Be sure to keep the casing unfolded. If you sew it up with the casing folded up, then you won’t be able to feed the elastic through.
STEP SEVEN
Now you need to sew the casing down.
STEP EIGHT
Feed the elastic through your casing, and sew it shut.
STEP NINE
And there you have it. I still plan on adding sleeves to it. I’ll try to add that step when I do it.
